Our Animals

Sooty. One of two cats from one litter, brought to us having been illtreated. Sooty quickly forgot his ill treatment and once attacked a dog which was attacking our dog Solo!
Sadly went missing some years later.
Sooty.

Sweep. The other of the two cats brought to us having been illtreated. Took a long time to learn to trust us, even scratching Solo's nose for her. Went missing in the snow once and was found by Snuggles who tracked him to several houses away. After that they were great friends.
Adopted by some girl students some years later when we were forced to move somewhere where cats weren't allowed.
Sweep.

Star. Snuggles discovered this tiny kitten with starry eyes up a tree. We had a lodger at the time who fell in love with Star. When we moved away, the lodger adopted Star.
Star.

Solo. We adopted Solo as a puppy. We visited the hous where she was born as Sheila wanted a dog. One puppy was hiding, but came out shyly and looked at Sheila. As I carried her home, she struggled to get out of my coat, so I put her down in a small patch of the road which wasn't covered in snow. She sat there looking abandoned and stayed in my coat without struggling after that. Years later she had a problem in one eye, but treatement to hold off an operation for a few weeks was successful for two years, leading the vet to describe her to his students as "his little miracle". Later she had to have a leg amputated for cancer, but it returned and she was finally put to sleep, after she visited all the other animals we had staying with us at the time. We are sure she was saying goodbye.
Solo.

Snuggles. One day, walking with Solo, a scruffy stray followed us and wouldn't leave Solo alone. We led him into a police station, but I returned the next day to adopt him. When he got wet we saw how undernourished he was, muscles wasted away. He had many happy years with Solo, who he adored. After Solo died, he was never the same. One day he couldn't come upstairs to see me and sat down and cried. We took him to the vet, who said his muscle wasting in his back legs had never really healed, and was amazed that he had ever run normally. He was in pain and the vet could do nothing but put him to sleep.
Snuggles.

Shadow. Our first dog from the refuge at Pilar. Old, ill and frail. We considered having her put to sleep, but at the mention of that, she got up and ran out the door. She made friends with lively Hiccup, a most unlikely combination. She was my shadow and tried never to leave my side, even struggling to get upstairs on one amazing memorable occasion. She died one night, just short of four weeks after she came to us. She died in our bedroom, knowing she was loved.
Shadow.

Growler. Another dog from the refuge at Pilar, growled at everyone, frightened of everyone except Sheila. Sadly went missing in the woods at Luján a few months after he came to us.

Sheila called this dog Holly because she is so happy and made Sheila think of Christmas and happy times. Anita asked us to take her from the refuge because Holly loves people and was depressed when nobody was there. When she arrived at our house in Luján she climbed onto an armchair and decided that she was home. Four months later she disappeared. We looked for her everywhere but couldn't find her. We moved house to La Reja a month later. Four months after she disappeared the caretaker of our old house saw her being fed at the slaughterhouse near our old house. When it rained she sheltered in the quincho of our old house and he caught her. Now she is home and very VERY happy. We are worried about her tail - if it wags much more it might fall off!
Holly died suddenly (heart) in January 2005. She lasted an hour but died on our bed being held by us.
Sheila llamó a esta perra Holly (acebo), porque es una perrita muy feliz y le recuerda a la Navidad y tiempos felices. Anita nos sugirió que la lleváramos del REFUGIO porque Holly necesita estar en compañia de la gente. Apenas llegó a nuestra casa en Luján, se adueñó de un sillón como diciendo "este es mi hogar". Cuatro meses más tarde, desapareció. La buscamos deseperadamente pero no pudimos encontrarla. Luego no mudamos a La Reja y cuatro meses más tarde recibimos la noticia del casero de la casa anterior que la había visto merodeando el matadero cerca de la casa! Un día de lluvia se refugió en el quincho de la casa de Luján y pudieron agarrarla. Ahora está con nosotros nuevamente y MUY FELIZ. Estamos un poco preocupados por su cola - ¡Se le va a salir de tanto moverla!
Acebo se murió de repente (corazón) en el enero de 2005. Duró una hora pero murió en nuestro cama estabando sostuvo por nosotros.

We went by bicycle to a restaurant in Plaza Belgrano in Luján. A street dog came to us, then went away again. When we cycled home, he ran after us, all the way home, which was over 3 kilometres. We named him Belgrano, the name of the square where he decided to adopt us. He can be aggressive with other dogs, but has calmed down since being castrated. He is very loving and wants lots of attention. He is an expert escapist and can climb a wire fence easily.
We put a long chain on Belgrano to prevent him escaping. He still escaped and did not return. We think that somebody used the chain to steal him.
Fuimos en bicicleta a un restaurante en Plaza Belgrano en Luján. Un perro callejero se acercó a nosotros, y luego se marchó. Cuando volvíamos para casa en las bicicletas, corrió detrás de nosotros hasta nuestro hogar, que estaba como a 3 kilómetros de distancia. Le pusimos Belgrano, el nombre de la plaza donde decidió adoptarnos. Puede ser agresivo con otros perros, pero se ha calmado bastante desde que fue castrado. Es muy amoroso y quiere mucha atención. Es un experto escapista y puede trepar una cerca de alambre fácilmente.
Pusimos una cadena larga en Belgrano prevenirlo escapa. Todavía escapó y no volvió. Pensamos que alguien usa la cadena robarlo.

Suertudo. Sheila found this thing when she got off a bus by mistake, near General Rodriques station. He was nearly being run over by cars trying not to kill him. He was covered in fleas and had scratched himself raw. He ate all we gave him: milk, eggs, dry dog food and meat. Alis gave him the name Suertudo. Now he is very happy and very active.
Suertudo had a couple of nasty infections, then suddenly stopped eating and drinking and became very anaemic with swollen kidneys. We had to have him put down in February 2005.
Suretudo. Sheila encontró esta cosita cuando por error se bajó antes del micro, cerca de la estación de Gral. Rodriguez. Estaba a punto de ser atropellado por los coches que intentaban no matarlo. Estaba cubierto de pulgas y todo lastimado por rascarse. Comió todo lo que le pusimos: leche huevos, alimento balanceado y carne. Alis le dio el nombre Suertudo. Ahora está muy feliz y muy activo.
Suertudo tenía un par de infecciones sucias, entonces de repente paró de comer y bebida y volvió muy anémico con riñones hinchados. Teníamos que tenerlo sacrifició en el febrero de 2005.

Lupo. (Wolf) One day Button went to our front gate and wouldn't leave the gate. When I looked through the gate a big tongue licked my hand. I opened the gate a Lupo walked in, jumped up on me and tried to lick my face. He had fleas and a few ticks, was very thin and his fur was in poor condition. He is quite dominant and has been involved in some fights, initially with Perry and Button and recently with Alfie.
Lupo is my personal failure. Even after being castrated, he continued to attack or intimidate Alfie. I was always having to hit or kick him to stop him attacking Alfie. He became more and more unhappy. Finally, in May 2005, after he attacked Alfie again, I led him outside the gate and let him go, to try to make him realise that he couldn't stay AND attack other dogs (this strategy had worked with Button). But Lupo never returned. I am told that sometimes street dogs will be unhappy kept in one place (as with Belgrano), perhaps that was the problem with Lupo.
Lupo. (Lobo) Un día Button fue a nuestra portón delantera y no vendría lejos de la portón. Cuando parecí por la portón una lengua grande lamió mi mano. Abrí la verja, un perro caminó en, saltó arriba en mí y trató de lamer mi cara. Tenía pulgas y unos garrapatas, estaba muy delgado y su piel estaba en condición pobre. Está realmente dominante y se ha envuelto en unas luchas, inicialmente con Perry y Botón y recientemente con Alfie.
Lupo es mi fracaso personal. Aun después de ser castrado, continuó atacar o intimidar Alfie. Tenía siempre que pegar o puntapié que detener él atacando Alfie. Se volvió más y más infeliz. Finalmente, en el mayo de 2005, después de que atacó Alfie de nuevo, lo llevé fuera de la verja y permitió que fuera, tratar de hacerlo da cuenta de que no podía quedar Y ataque otro perros (esta estrategia había funcionado con Button). We brought Queenie home to die in comfort. But she didn't agree with us! She is full of life. In the first photo she is doing her usual morning barking, announcing to the world that she's happy to see another day. She loves to walk and run, even if she cannot run very much or very fast. She is the grand old lady of the house and all the others respect her.
She finally became ill as her organs failed and had to be put to sleep. Daisy, a puppy decided to spend the last hours with her and lay next to her until the vet came to do the deed.
La trajimos a Queenie a nuestro hogar para morir confortablemente. ¡Pero no estuvo de acuerdo con nosotros! Está llena de vida. En la primera fotografía hace su usual ladrido matutino anunciándole al mundo que está feliz de ver otro nuevo día. A ella le encanta caminar y correr, aun cuando no puede correr mucho ni muy rápido. Es la gran dama mayor de la casa y todos los otros perros le tienen un gran respeto.

Daisy. Daisy was one of three puppies abandoned with their mother in a cardboard box 200 metres from our house. The mother ran far away, and the puppies were very hungry and thirsty, and covered in fleas, so we have taken the puppies to take care of. We didn't really want MORE dogs, but we couldn't leave them to die in the street so we are looking for homes for them. (The marks on their faces are grass seeds - they had been rolling in the grass)
Daisy's brother Biscuit and her had had a serious intestinal infection. Daisy ended up with an impacted intestine, a complication. The vet operated but she died the next morning. Ironic that after laying with her friend Queenie, that she would be next to die.
Daisy. Daisy una de tres cachorros se abandonaron con su madre en un cartón 200 metros de nuestra casa. La madre corrió lejos, y los cachorros estaban muy hambrientos y sedientos, y cubrió en pulgas, para que hemos tomado los cachorros tomar cuidado de. No queríamos verdaderamente MAS perros, pero no podíamos salir morirse en la calle para que buscamos hogares por ellos. (Las marcas en sus caras son césped sembra - habían rodado en el césped)

Wispy. I saw Wispy at the refuge as she ran away from me looking frightened. She was so scared that she tried to bite me when I approached her. She isn't scared now!
When Sheila was dying I had to move house. The fencing wasn't secure and I was exhausted trying to make it so. Wispy escaped and I never saw her again.
Wispy. Vi Wispy al refugio cuando huyó de mí parece asustó. Se asustó de manera que trató de morderme cuando me la acerqué. ¡No se asusta ahora!

We saw Alfie at the refuge last year and we thought how sad it was that such a big strong dog should be so afraid. The other dogs often attacked him (even when we were taking him out). As a joke I named him Ali, short in english for Alsation. We later changed this to Alfie.
We began to gradually get closer to him each time we visited the refuge. One day we decided it was time to catch him and bring him home. We chased him into a kennel and gave him some food and milk with tranquilising drops. It was still a struggle to get him out of the kennel and into a big cage and he tried to bite us. We brought him home by a small van. He was very scared of us, and refused to eat or drink anything. Surprisingly, he was not afraid of the dogs, who we introduced to him one by one, but they were very gentle with him (and Holly was a flirt!) Amber and Buby were especially friendly to him.
The next morning we dragged him to the Quincho for feeding, but he wouldn't eat. Finally after watching all the others, he began to drink and eat. We I tried to remove a chain that was tripping him up, we growled at me and bared his teeth, so I gave him a sharp tap on the nose. Holly was wonderful, she came and sat on my lap, licking me, so Alfie calmed down and let me alter the chain.
Now he sleeps with Kim, who has become his best friend.
Another casualty of Sheila dying suddenly (see Wispy above). Alfie also went missing and was hit by a vehicle and killed.
Descubrimos a Alfie en el refugio el año pasado y nos dió mucha pena ver que un perro tan grande vivía tan asustado y temeroso. Los otros perros a menudo lo atacaban, incluso cuando estabábamos con él fuera de su cucha. Un poco a modo de chiste, lo llamamos Ali, como abreviatura de Alsation. lo cambiamos luego por Alfie.
Empezamos lentamente a ganarse su confianza durante sus visitas al refugio y para su cumpleaños, decidimos que ya era hora de traerlo a casa Lo metimos en un canil y le dimos algo de leche y comida junto con unas gotas tranquilizantes. Fue difícil sacarlo de ahí para ponerlo en un jaula y llevarlo, incluso intentó morder a nosotoros. Lo trajimos a casa en una camioneta, estaba muy asustado de nostros y se negó a comer o tomar nada. Sorprendentemente no se asustó con los perros, quienes fueron introducidos a él uno por uno. Los perros fueron muy gentiles y cuidadosos con él y Amber y Buby se mostraron especialmente amistosos.
A la mañana siguiente lo llevamos al Quincho para que comiera algo, pero no quiso hacerlo. Finalmente, al ver que los demás perros lo hacían, comenzó a comer y beber también. Intentamos sacarle una cadena que colgaba de su cuello, pero me gruñó y mostró los dientes. Entonces le dí un pequeño golpe en la nariz como advertencia. Holly estuvo fantástica, se me acercó y lamiéndome se sentó en mi falda. Fue entonces que Alfie me permitió sacarle la cadena.
Ahora duerme con Kim, que se ha vuelto su amiga mejor.

Some friends rescued Kim from a farm where she had been neglected. But, a few weeks later they became ill and couldn't take care of her. When they were better, Kim had become so fond of us that they felt that it would be cruel to Kim to separate her from us. When Perry and Hiccup were puppies and were frightened, she licked their faces to calm them.
Another casualty of Sheila dying. Kim escaped and found poison. She died beside my bed, too far gone for a vet to help.
Unos amigos rescataron a Kim de una granja donde la habían abandonado. Pero, unas semanas más tarde, se enfermó y no pudieron cuidarla más. Cuando mejoró, Kim se había encariñado tanto con us que sintieron que sería cruel separarla de nosotros. Cuando Perry y Hiccup eran cachorros y se asustaban, ella lamía sus caras para calmarlos.

Pugsy. Pugsy was outside a supermarket and laid her head on one of our feet. She was starving, very weak and covered in fleas.
Just before Sheila died, to stem the flow of casualties, I sent 12 dogs to the refuge at Pilar until my new house was secure for the dogs. Pugsy was taken for adoption.
Pugsy. Pugsy .

Roberta. Roberta was another old dog that was always really pleased to see us at the refuge. She walks with a limp and was beginning to feel the cold as the weather became cooler and wet.
Just before Sheila died, to stem the flow of casualties, I sent 12 dogs to the refuge at Pilar until my new house was secure for the dogs. Unknown to me, Roberta ourned and wouldn't eat, until she died a few days before I went to collect them.
Roberta. Roberta era otra perra vieja que siempre estaba muy feliz ver nosotros al refugio. Camina con un cojera y empezaba a sentir la fria como el tiempo se volvió más fresco y mojado.

Dora. Dora (short for Dorada which means gold, so it's the spanish equivalent of "Goldie") had followed us everywhere she went in the refuge. She even waited patiently by the fence when we went to the other field to feed the horse. She had lived in another refuge before she was in the refuge in Pilar, but for some reason, she loves people! She was rather fat, but is now loosing weight because she is more active here, especially in the late evenings.
Died the winter after Sheila died, probably simply of old age.
Dora. Dora (corto por Dorada) había seguido nostoros por todas partes en el refugio. Ella aun esperó por nosotros cerco cuando fuimos al otro campo alimentar al caballo. ¡Había vivido en otro refugio antes de estaba en el refugio en Pilar, pero por unos razón, a ella le encantan a personas! Estaba gordura, pero suelta ahora peso porque está más activo aquí, sobre todo en las tardes tardes.

Way. Way was abandoned on the autopista (motorway) and was hit by a car. He had a badly broken leg, the bone is splintered. He also had a bad abscess on his penis. He was rescued, taken to a vet and brought to us.
He developed a syndrome which appears like a stroke in a human. Very dehydrated he finally bit Sheila in confusion. We managed to get fluid into him and he finally recovered but took weeks to learn to walk again.
He went downhill again and died about six months after Sheila died.
Way. Way se abandonó en el autopista y se pegó por un auto. Tiene un mal pierna rota, se astilla el hueso. También tenía un absceso malo en su pene. Se rescató, le toma a un veterinario y nos trajo.

Guarro. Guarro lived on the street in Moreno. He was injured by a car. Another couple took him home, but he attacked their other dog, so they brought him to us. He is aggressive with Snowy so we have to keep him separated.
He finally died just under a year after Sheila died, having outlasted all our expectations.
Guarro. Guarro vivió en la calle en Moreno. Fue dañado por un auto. Otra pareja le tomó a sus hogar, excepto el atacó a su otro perro, para que nos lo trajeron. Está agresivo con Snowy para que tenemos que guardar lo separado.

Scrappy. Thrown into the main road near my house, I rescued him. He was later adopted by a family that adores him.

Amber was taken from a refuge by a girl who worked for me. She wanted a guard dog, but had never had a dog before and she couldn't cope with Amber. So we took Amber. Amber thinks all the other dogs (and any other small animals) are her puppies to take care of and she is very gentle with them. She cannot understand why cats and small dogs are often frightened of her at first. She only wants to be friends. She allows Perry to be the boss, but can and does intervene if any play-fighting is too rough.
When she was young she was diagnosed with a heart condition. Six months before Sheila died she had to be put on heart medication and kidney medication. She was never really the same but contrary to the vets' expectations, survived another 18 months.
Amber (Ambar) proviene de un refugio de una chica que trabajó para mi. Quería un perro guardián, pero nunca había tenido un perro antes y por lo tanto no podía tener a un perro como Amber. Por eso la adoptamos. Ella piensa que todos los otros perros (y cualquier otro animal pequeño) son sus cachorros y los cuida y es muy amable con ellos. No puede entender porqué gatos y perros pequeños a menudo se asustan de ella al principio. Ella sólo quiere tener amigos. Deja que Perry sea el jefe, pero puede intervenir y de hecho lo hace si cualquier perro que juega está demasiado agresivo.

Hiccup was very weak from hunger when Perry led her to us. Soon she was strong and playful. She loves to play-fight with Perry and jump up on everybody. New people or new animals have no choice... Hiccup is going to be their friend whether they like it or not.
As Hiccup could still escape from my new house (I don't have money for good enough fences), she was one of many dogs I had to keep on a long chain. One night I returned from my work to find her hanging, dead. Horrific.
Hiccup (Hipo) estaba muy débil de hambre cuando Perry la condujo hacia nosotros. Pronto estaba fuerte y juguetón. Le encanta a jugar a la lucha con Perry y saltar arriba de todos. Todos los que lo conocen no tienen alternativa, Hiccup va a ser su amiga quieran o no.

Popsy is our only cat. We've had her for nearly ten years. She thinks that she is better than the dogs and loves to sleep on our bed.

Cabildo. Found injured in the street by an American who brought him here to be cared for.
Sadly died from a combination of internal parasites, injesting pine needles and cancer.

Cheeky. Found up a tree outside my house in Garin. Sadly went missing a few weeks after a moved to Escobar.

Pulgy. Thrown into a tree truck to die as a tiny puppy, he became friends with Cabildo and the cats. Sadly he was killed in a tragic accident a month after I moved to Escobar when a large panel to be used for fencing somehow fell on him.

Button. We saw Button limping in the street in La Reja (2004). Later that evening we went to find him. He was curled up on some grass, shivering with the cold (on a warm night) and covered with ticks. He brought him home, gave him a warm bath, fed him, removed lots of ticks, and he slept on the sofa. He did not have much fur so he felt the cold. NOW, July 2008, he has a new home and family who adore him.
Button. Vimos Button (Botón) cojea en la calle en La Reja (2004). Más tarde anoche que fuimos encontrarlo. Se rizó en algo de césped, estremece con el frio (en una noche calurosa) y cubrió con garrapatas. Le trajo hogar, le dio un baño caluroso, lo alimentó, alejado muchos garrapatas, y el durmió en el sofá. No tenia mucho piel para que sientaba el frio. AHORA, julio 2008, tiene un hogar nuevo y una familia quien le adoran

Button, Day 6. He was too weak to eat for the first few days, but is eating a lot now. His fur was matted into wet clumps which hid more ticks, so we cut off most of his fur. Now you can see how thin he was.
